my convo with patti smith:
Glowing from the success of her National Book Award-winning “Just Kids,” Patti Smith is returning to rock ‘n’ roll, and her 11th album “Banga” reminds us she is still as powerful behind the mic as she is on the page. She talked to The Daily about the album, Amy Winehouse, and why she’s happy.
Did you have a mantra while making “Banga”?
“Believer explode” — it’s playful. “Banga” was the earliest song, it’s about love and loyalty, people and the band, it’s high-spirited. I feel like it’s an optimistic record — it’s happily arranged — that’s its motto [laughs].
