The Tumblrification of Jessica Hopper
(Art by Sarah)
We’ve all heard about the unjust imprisonment of Pussy Riot, and although I applaud their feminist stand and the huge amount of protests and support that the world has given these women, there seems to be a tragic lack of attention given to a person who (perhaps more)…
This point about Pussy Riot is part of the reason I didn’t write about the trial. Maybe that’s a ridiculous reason. It is heartbreaking, as a mom, to know these women are in jail, away from their kids, because of their art and ardent feminism. But! But! after so many posts that talked about how it was unjust, but also, they look super cool and it helps that they are hot, I was thinking cynical things, like, “Maybe if these refugees dressed cuter, cool kids and musicians around the world my protest in support, too.” But I think the real take away isn’t to have a #whitegirlproblems attitude towards Pussy Riot, but rather a hope that the same energy and outrage people poured into #FreePussyRiot and it’s various memes, could and should be applied to CeCe McDonald’s struggle to be treated like a fucking human and other struggles for justice.
